Chromium for Blood Sugar: What the Studies Show and Where Olivaro Fits

Quick answer

Chromium studies on blood sugar are mixed. Trials mostly used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, and a 2019 review found only slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in people with diabetes (NIH ODS, Chromium). Healthy people saw no change. Olivaro gives 0.7 mcg per dropper, or 1.4 mcg at 2 droppers, far below those doses.

The full Olivaro label laid flat, with the Supplement Facts panel listing chromium 0.7 mcg on the right
The Olivaro label lists chromium picolinate at 0.7 mcg per 1 mL dropper, 2% of the Daily Value. It is the one ingredient with its own printed amount.

The basics

What is chromium, and why is it tied to blood sugar?

Chromium is a trace mineral that helps insulin do its job. Your body needs only tiny amounts, measured in micrograms (mcg) (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Insulin moves sugar from your blood into your cells, and chromium seems to support that step. That link is why chromium shows up in so many blood sugar products.

A link in the lab is not the same as a result in people. The real question is what happens when adults take chromium pills for weeks or months. The answer, as the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) puts it, is mixed (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Chromium picolinate is the form used most in trials and the form on the Olivaro label. Our chromium page has the full profile.

Daily needs

How much chromium do adults need each day?

Adults need about 20 to 35 mcg of chromium a day, depending on sex and age. The Daily Value on supplement labels is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). Trials on blood sugar used far more than that.

Chromium amounts compared, per day. Figures from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements and the Olivaro label.
MeasureAmount per dayWhat it means
Adequate Intake, women 19-5025 mcgEnough for most healthy women in this age group
Adequate Intake, men 19-5035 mcgEnough for most healthy men in this age group

Olivaro, 1 dropper0.7 mcg2% of the Daily Value

So Olivaro's chromium is small even next to the basic daily need. It is tiny next to the trial doses. The math runs from about 140 times less (1.4 vs 200 mcg) to about 1,400 times less (0.7 vs 1,000 mcg).

The evidence

What do chromium studies show for blood sugar?

They show a small effect at best, and only in some people. A 2019 review found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in people with diabetes (NIH ODS, Chromium). The authors could not say the change mattered for health.

In people without diabetes, chromium does not appear to change blood sugar at all (NIH ODS, Chromium). So the studies give no sign of a benefit for normal numbers.

  • Doses in trials: about 200 to 1,000 mcg a day.
  • Main form tested: chromium picolinate.
  • People with diabetes: slight changes of unclear value.
  • Healthy people: no clear change.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) lists chromium among a few supplements with only weak evidence for diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). The American Diabetes Association goes further. It says supplements have no clear benefit unless you lack a nutrient to begin with (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

Why the results disagree

Trials differed in dose, length and the people they enrolled. Small trials can also lean one way by chance.

To scale

How does Olivaro's chromium compare with study doses?

Olivaro's top daily amount is 1.4 mcg, at 2 droppers. The lowest trial dose was 200 mcg. On the chart below the chromium bar barely shows up.

Each bar compares what 2 droppers a day can supply with the low end of the research dose. Chromium is printed on the label. For blend ingredients we use the average share, 400 mg divided by 22, about 18 mg; the real amount of any one ingredient is not disclosed and could be higher or lower. Studies tested each ingredient alone, not Olivaro.

The other bars use an estimate, because the blend amounts are hidden. Chromium needs no estimate. The label prints its amount, so the gap is exact. You can see the full panel on our Supplement Facts page.

On the bottle

What does the Olivaro label say about chromium?

The label lists "Chromium (as chromium picolinate) 0.7 mcg" and "2% DV" per 1 mL serving. It is the only ingredient with its own amount. The other 22 share a 200 mg proprietary blend.

Chromium on the Olivaro label, per serving and per day
FormChromium picolinate
Per 1 mL dropper0.7 mcg (2% DV)
Per day, label range0.7 to 1.4 mcg
Label directionsShake well before each use. Take 1 or 2 droppers full daily. Place in mouth and swallow.

A printed amount is a fair point in Olivaro's favor. You know exactly what you get. What you get, though, is a trace. If chromium is the main reason you are shopping, a product that prints a dose closer to the studied range is the closer match.

Do not try to close the gap with extra droppers. The label caution says "Do not exceed recommended dose."

Safety

Who should be careful with chromium supplements?

People who take diabetes medicine or thyroid medicine should ask a doctor first. Chromium may add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, which can raise the risk of low blood sugar (NIH ODS, Chromium). It may also reduce how well levothyroxine is absorbed (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Talk to your doctor before you change any diabetes medicine

Never cut or stop a prescribed drug because you started a supplement. Bring the bottle to your next visit so your care team can see the whole label.

At Olivaro's 0.7 to 1.4 mcg, the chromium alone is unlikely to cause trouble. Other blend ingredients are a different matter. Ginseng, gymnema and African mango may also add to diabetes drugs. Our guide to supplements and diabetes medicine covers each one.

Rare case reports have linked high chromium doses to kidney and liver harm (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Bottom line

Is the chromium in Olivaro worth paying for?

Not if chromium is your main goal. Olivaro is a mixed formula with a trace of chromium, not a chromium supplement.

In its favor

  • The chromium amount and form are printed.
  • Most trials used the picolinate form.
  • A trace amount is unlikely to cause side effects alone.

Against it, for chromium

  • 1.4 mcg a day is about 140 times below the lowest trial dose.
  • Trial results were mixed even at full doses.
  • No study has tested Olivaro itself.

FAQ

Chromium and blood sugar FAQ

Does chromium lower blood sugar?

Chromium has only a small, uncertain effect. A 2019 review found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in people with diabetes, of unclear value for health (NIH ODS, Chromium). In healthy people it does not appear to change blood sugar. It is not a substitute for diabetes care.

How much chromium should I take a day for blood sugar?

No dose is set for blood sugar. Adults need about 20 to 35 mcg a day, and the Daily Value is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). Trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg, with mixed results. Ask your doctor before taking more than a basic multivitamin amount, especially with diabetes medicine.

How much chromium is in Olivaro?

Each 1 mL dropper of Olivaro has 0.7 mcg of chromium as chromium picolinate, 2% of the Daily Value. At the label's top amount of 2 droppers a day, that is 1.4 mcg. Trials on blood sugar used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day.

Is chromium picolinate safe?

At normal amounts chromium picolinate is usually well tolerated. It may add to insulin and other diabetes drugs and may lower levothyroxine absorption (NIH ODS, Chromium). Rare case reports link high doses to kidney and liver harm. Tell your doctor before you start any chromium product.

Can I take chromium with metformin?

Ask your doctor first. Chromium may add to the effect of diabetes medicines, which could raise the risk of low blood sugar, especially with insulin or sulfonylureas (NIH ODS, Chromium). Your doctor can check your numbers and decide if any change is safe for you.

How long does chromium take to work?

Trials ran for weeks to months, and even then results were mixed (NIH ODS, Chromium). There is no set timeline. If you try chromium, agree on a test date with your doctor, then compare your A1C or fasting glucose before and after.

Is 0.7 mcg of chromium enough to matter?

Compared with the studies, no. One Olivaro dropper gives 0.7 mcg, while trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day (NIH ODS, Chromium). That is roughly 140 to 1,400 times less. The printed amount is honest, but it is a trace, not a research dose.
