Ingredient profile

Panax Ginseng in Olivaro: Evidence, Label Form and Safety

Quick answer

Olivaro lists Panax Ginseng Aerial Extract, 12th of 22 in its 200 mg blend, with no amount printed. A review of 16 trials found ginseng lowered fasting glucose by about 5.6 mg/dL with no change in A1C (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014). Those trials mostly used the root. Ginseng may add to diabetes medicine and affect blood clotting (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

The basics

What is Panax ginseng?

Panax ginseng, also called Asian or Korean ginseng, is a slow-growing plant whose root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for a very long time. It is not the same plant as eleuthero, sometimes sold as "Siberian ginseng", which Olivaro also lists (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

Ginseng is sold for energy, focus and blood sugar. Of those uses, blood sugar has the most clinical trials.

The evidence

Does ginseng lower blood sugar?

A little, in some studies. A 2014 meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials with 770 people found that ginseng lowered fasting glucose by about 0.31 mmol/L, or roughly 5.6 mg/dL (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).

The same analysis found no clear effect on A1C or fasting insulin. A1C reflects average blood sugar over about three months, so it is the number doctors watch most.

  • Results varied widely from trial to trial.
  • Doses ranged from about 100 mg to 20 g a day (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).
  • The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health calls the diabetes evidence inconclusive and conflicting, though a 2022 review of 20 studies saw fasting glucose gains (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

Put another way, a 5.6 mg/dL change is smaller than the gap between many morning readings. It would not move someone from the diabetes range to normal.

Context

How big is a 5.6 mg/dL drop next to the diagnosis ranges?

It is a small slice of each range. Fasting glucose of 100-125 mg/dL counts as prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher points to diabetes (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

  1. NormalA1CBelow 5.7%Fasting glucose99 mg/dL or below
  2. PrediabetesA1C5.7% to 6.4%Fasting glucose100 to 125 mg/dL
  3. DiabetesA1C6.5% or higherFasting glucose126 mg/dL or higher

NIDDK ranges (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). Only a lab test and a clinician can make a diagnosis. Low blood sugar usually means a reading below 70 mg/dL (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).

The prediabetes band alone spans 25 mg/dL. Lifestyle change has much stronger results: in the Diabetes Prevention Program, aiming for 7% weight loss plus 150 minutes of activity a week cut type 2 risk by 58% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program). Our blood sugar basics guide explains what each number means.

Label detail

Why does the word 'aerial' on the label matter?

"Aerial" refers to the parts above ground: leaves and stems. Most ginseng trials tested the root, so their results may not apply to Olivaro's extract (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).

Leaves and roots of the same plant can hold different compounds in different amounts. We could not find trials of aerial-part ginseng extract for blood sugar. That does not prove it does nothing. It means no one has shown what it does.

Three unknowns in one line

The label does not give the amount, the extract strength, or any study of this plant part. Each one makes the root research harder to apply.

On the label

How much Panax ginseng is in Olivaro?

The amount is not printed. Ginseng is 12th of 22 in the 200 mg blend, and because blends list ingredients from most to least by weight, it can be about 17 mg per dropper at most (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

Panax ginseng in Olivaro compared with the trials. Olivaro amounts are upper limits from label order, not measured values.
ItemOlivaroMeta-analysis trials
Plant partAerial (leaf and stem)Mostly root
Daily amountNot printed; at most about 33 mg at 2 droppersAbout 100 mg to 20 g
Fasting glucose resultNot studiedAbout 5.6 mg/dL lower

The ceiling is a logical limit, not a lab result. The real amount could be far lower. See the complete Olivaro ingredient list for where ginseng sits among the other 21.

Safety

Who should not take ginseng without asking a doctor?

People on diabetes medicine or blood thinners should ask first. Ginseng might lower blood sugar and may interfere with blood clotting and some medicines (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

Ginseng cautions from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, applied to Olivaro users.
SituationWhy it matters
Insulin or diabetes pillsEffects may add up and push readings too low
Warfarin or other blood thinnersGinseng may affect clotting
Trouble sleepingInsomnia is the most common side effect
PregnancyGinseng may be unsafe; the label asks pregnant women to consult a physician
Autoimmune diseaseGinseng may affect the immune system; ask your doctor

Never change a diabetes medicine without talking to your doctor first. Olivaro also lists chromium, gymnema and African mango, which may add to the same effect. Lows below 70 mg/dL can bring shakiness, sweating or confusion (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).

The guarana and green tea in the blend add caffeine. If you notice poor sleep, that may be a factor along with the ginseng.

Brand claims

What does the brand say about how Olivaro works?

The brand describes a simple routine: follow the label, use the formula, keep it daily. Its sales page frames Olivaro as nutritional support for glucose metabolism, metabolic health and weight management.

The brand graphics name no ingredients and no doses. They do not mention ginseng at all, and they cite no study of the finished product.

Read the brand's own wording next to the claims vs evidence review before you decide.

Our take

Is the ginseng in Olivaro likely to help?

There is no good evidence that it will. Root ginseng showed a modest fasting glucose effect, but Olivaro uses a different plant part at an unknown, small amount.

In its favor

  • Ginseng has more blood sugar trials than most herbs
  • A modest fasting glucose drop in pooled root studies

Against it

  • No A1C effect in the main review
  • Aerial extract, not the studied root
  • Amount hidden; at most about 17 mg per dropper

African mango is next in the series.

FAQ

Panax ginseng in Olivaro: common questions

Does Panax ginseng lower A1C?

No clear A1C effect has been found. The main meta-analysis of 16 trials saw a modest drop in fasting glucose, about 5.6 mg/dL, but no significant change in A1C or fasting insulin. Those trials mostly used root extracts, while Olivaro lists an aerial extract.

How much ginseng is in Olivaro?

Olivaro does not print it. Ginseng is 12th of 22 in a 200 mg blend, so label order limits it to about 17 mg per dropper at most, or about 33 mg at 2 droppers. Studies used about 100 mg to 20 g a day.

What is the difference between ginseng root and aerial extract?

Root extract comes from the underground root, the part used in most trials. Aerial extract comes from leaves and stems. The two parts can contain different compounds in different amounts, so root results cannot be assumed for Olivaro's leaf and stem extract.

Can you take ginseng with warfarin?

Ask your doctor first. Ginseng may interfere with blood clotting and interact with some medicines, so anyone on warfarin or another blood thinner needs medical advice before using a ginseng product, including blends like Olivaro where the amount is not printed.

Can ginseng keep you awake at night?

Yes, insomnia is the most common side effect reported for Asian ginseng. Olivaro also contains guarana and green tea, which add caffeine. If your sleep changes after you start, tell your doctor and consider stopping to see whether it improves.

Is ginseng safe for people with diabetes?

It may be, with medical guidance. Ginseng might lower blood sugar and add to insulin or diabetes pills, so people with diabetes should talk to their provider first. Learn the signs of a low, such as shakiness, sweating and hunger, and never adjust medicine on your own.

Is Panax ginseng the same as Siberian ginseng?

No. Siberian ginseng is eleuthero, a different plant with different compounds. Olivaro lists both: Eleutherococcus senticosus root extract fifth in the blend and Panax ginseng aerial extract twelfth. Research on one does not apply to the other.
